Proactively rescuing rhinos before anymore killing is done.
Rhino 911 along with Rhino Pride Foundation, Flying for Freedom South Africa and Zodiac Animal Clinic has completed the first historic mission of trimming the horns of the entire rhino population in 2 South African National parks, Mahikeng and Botsalano Game Reserves
Right now, to trim or not to trim a Rhino's horn often leads to an emotional debate rather than effective action.
We want to be very clear, we no longer have the option of debate. The number of Rhinos that are poached has dramatically increased over the years, however when there is no horn for the poachers to take, poaching is decreased.
Rhino horn is like your fingernail, if you trim your nail, the nail grows back. Same with Rhino Horn. If you had asked us 5 years ago if we would trim Rhino's horns we would have said no. Now, we have no choice, we proactively trim Rhino horns so they are not a target for the poachers. This is a veterinary procedure when the Rhino is tranquilized and the horn is trimmed. It does not hurt the Rhino at all.
There is science that proves the Rhinos who have been trimmed are not impacted socially or hampered in their breeding.
It is a practical solution in this time of crisis.
All of the services, supplies and equipment were donated by every team involved. There was no cost to the reserves and we are so honored to work with the teams at the parks to trim these horns.
Thank you for everyone's help, we were able to trim all of the 29 rhinos including treating 3 rhinos who had recent bullet wounds from poachers, one of the rhinos is pregnant.
It was a very emotional day, everyone working vigilantly to do all we can to defend these magnificent animals.
